Job security is a concern of everyone, especially now that we are experiencing global recession. Engineers also worry about the same thing. Regardless of profession, the world is abuzz with stories about different companies' struggles to regain financial footing, as well as others' triumphs, too. Because it's a global crisis, everyone cannot be blamed for thinking that way. However, because of initiatives from the government as well as some engineering firms, it seems that economic recovery is underway and the huge question now is how and in what way these changes will shape the future of engineering.

One way for you to truly succeed in this field is to keep yourself informed about technology and competition in your field. Going back to school for higher education or attending online courses will help you become more adept at what you do. The State also requires that all engineers renew their licenses regularly. Do that so you can work as freely as you want, thereby earning credits from your professional work. Do not hesitate to change the branch of engineering you are currenty in if you feel you don't have a future in it.

In the suceeding years, industries such as health and fitness and anything that has to do with beauty will definitely stay longer than any other domain. Why is this so? Because people always want to look beautiful and fit regardless of their age. Likewise, with the younger generation focusing more on their careers, the need for additional facilities for old people living in homes-for-the-aged will surely prosper. Thus, staying ahead or at least keeping up with the latest developments in mechanical and civil engineering will truly help.

Another field that has the possibility to make it big is environmental engineering. Since the government espouses the use of renewable energy and "green products", environmental engineering seems like the answer to the growing problem. Grants for continuous research and development efforts are plenty that's why there might be a shortage of engineers in the future. Private companies are also helping the government in its efforts to bring the concept of renewable energy closer to the people.

Another thing is job outsourcing. This proves to be a good option for some companies because they don't have to pay high maintenance costs or engineering salaries, and yet, they still get the quality output they desire. Thus, new buildings need to be constructed and this results to more opportunities for local engineers.

The US Labor Statistics Bureau came up with a report saying that in 10 years time (from 2008 - 2018), growth in number of engineers will increase by 11%. Out of the huge number of engineering practitioners, about 45% of the 1.6 million professionals come from Mechanical, Industrial, or Civic Engineering, while the rest are spread throughout the other branches of engineering. In contrast, there are only a handful of engineers coming from marine and naval engineering, safety and mining engineering, and agricultural engineering.

Finally, despite fears of losing jobs or the unstable economy nowadays, another option for some engineers is to set up their own engineering practice and become their own boss.
